Thermolysis Electrolysis

The fast, high-frequency method that disables the follicle with precisely controlled heat.

Thermolysis, also known as short-wave or high-frequency electrolysis, is the quickest of the three modalities. Rather than triggering a chemical reaction, it uses an alternating current to produce heat exactly where it is needed, at the base of the follicle.

Its speed makes it a natural fit for fine hair and for areas with a large number of follicles to treat, which is why it is one of the most widely used methods in modern practice.

How thermolysis works

Once the probe is resting in the follicle, a high-frequency current causes the water molecules around the follicle base to vibrate rapidly. That vibration generates gentle, localised heat, which disables the hair-producing cells in a fraction of a second.

Because the energy is delivered quickly and precisely, an experienced practitioner can work through many follicles in a session, making thermolysis efficient for larger or denser areas.

Where thermolysis shines

Fine and shallow hair

The rapid heat is well matched to finer follicles that do not need the depth of chemical action.

Speed across an area

Its quick per-follicle action suits areas with many hairs, keeping sessions efficient.

Versatility

It can be dialled up or down and combined with galvanic as blend when a follicle needs more thoroughness.

Extra care on richer skin tones

Because thermolysis works through heat, it calls for a more measured approach on deeper skin tones. Richer, more melanated skin (typically Fitzpatrick IV to VI) has more reactive pigment cells, so heat-based treatment carries a higher risk of temporary post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, where the skin darkens as it heals.

This does not rule electrolysis out for deeper skin at all. It simply guides the choice of method. For these skin types we generally favour the gentler chemical action of galvanic or blend, use conservative settings and insulated probes, avoid over-working any one area, and pair treatment with sun protection and careful aftercare. A patch test and consultation let us confirm the safest approach for your skin before we begin.
