One of the great strengths of electrolysis is that it treats the follicle directly rather than chasing pigment. That means it can be used on every Fitzpatrick skin type, from the very fairest skin to the deepest tones, and on any hair colour.
What changes with skin tone is not whether electrolysis works, but how we go about it. For richer, more melanated skin we take a more tailored, cautious approach, and being open about that is part of doing the treatment properly.
The Fitzpatrick scale
The Fitzpatrick scale is a simple way of describing how skin responds to sun, from Type I (very fair, always burns) through to Type VI (deeply pigmented, never burns). It helps us anticipate how skin is likely to react and plan treatment accordingly.
Types I to III
Fair to medium skin. Electrolysis is well tolerated, with method chosen for the hair and area.
Types IV to VI
Olive through to deeply pigmented skin. Electrolysis is still suitable, but we favour gentler settings and chemical-led methods to protect the skin.
Why deeper skin needs a tailored approach
Richer skin contains more active melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment. When skin is irritated, those cells can respond by producing extra pigment as it heals, which shows up as temporary post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (a darkening of the treated spot). Heat is one of the things that can trigger this response.
This is exactly why the choice of method matters so much on deeper skin. It is not that electrolysis is unsafe; it is that the wrong settings, used carelessly, carry a higher risk of these temporary marks on melanated skin.
How we keep deeper skin safe
Favouring the gentle chemical action of galvanic or blend over intensive thermolysis heat.
Using conservative energy settings and spacing treatment so no single area is over-worked.
Using insulated probes to concentrate energy at the follicle base and protect the skin surface.
Starting with a patch test and consultation to see how your skin responds before a full session.
Pairing treatment with diligent sun protection and aftercare to support even healing.
